“Breathe.”
“You just have to breathe.”
“Inhale…”
“Exhale…”
I lay on a cold, stone floor, surrounded by lifeless bodies. They found our little hideout, and we were exterminated like any other unnecessary people. Society needs to be as efficient as possible, and that makes people like me unnecessary. But I don’t want to die. I’m human too, aren’t I? Aren’t I?
I continue counting the seconds between my breaths as I think. We were mowed down, but I just barely managed to feign death. Now, I lay alive among a pile of bodies. Do I deserve to be dead with them? If I try to leave now, I’ll likely join them either way. Now that I’m here, was prolonging my life really worth it? Now I have to die alone.
“The world really is an unfair place.”
I close my eyes and try to convince my mind and body that I’m dead.
